IPL vs Laser: How to Choose for Your Clinic
One is a single coherent wavelength built for precision. The other is filtered broadband light built for range. The right answer depends on your treatment menu, not on which brochure is shinier.
What a laser gives you
A laser is light with discipline: one wavelength (monochromatic), waves marching in step (coherent), traveling in a near-parallel beam (collimated), and able to focus to extremely high energy density. Those four properties are not vanity. Monochromaticity is what makes selective photothermolysis possible, because the beam can be tuned to one chromophore and mostly ignored by everything else.
The cost of that discipline is narrowness. An 808nm diode laser removes hair superbly and does almost nothing else. A Q-switched Nd:YAG shatters pigment and ink and little more. Precision is the product.
What IPL gives you
An IPL flashlamp is the opposite philosophy. It emits a broadband composite of ultraviolet, visible and infrared light, and cut-off filters then select the working band. Change the filter and you change the treatment: 610-1200nm for hair reduction, 530-1200nm for photorejuvenation, 585-1200nm for vascular work, 560-1200nm for pigment, 430-1200nm for acne care. One console, five indications.
Two technical details separate serious IPL platforms from toys. First, the filtration must be absolute at the short end: our systems use a dual filtration design, a special UV tube plus filters, that removes everything below 400nm so no ultraviolet reaches the skin. Second, the pulse must be shapeable. Sub-pulses with adjustable intervals let energy arrive in portions the skin can tolerate, which is how broadband light stays selective in practice.
Where each one wins
Hair removal is the cleanest comparison. A diode laser at 808nm is faster per session, more comfortable with modern contact cooling, and the better answer for a high-volume hair removal business. IPL hair reduction works, and on light-to-medium skin it works well, but it asks for more sessions and more care. If hair removal is your headline service, buy the diode. If it is one service among five, the IPL platform may pay for itself sooner.
Pigment and tattoos belong to the Q-switched laser, full stop; no IPL pulse shape matches 6 nanoseconds. Photorejuvenation, diffuse redness and mixed sun damage are IPL's home ground, because the targets are scattered and the broadband spectrum catches several at once. Resurfacing belongs to the CO2 laser. Vascular work splits: fine diffuse redness suits IPL, discrete vessels suit lasers.
The E-light wrinkle
E-light platforms add bipolar RF to the IPL pulse. RF current heats the dermis without caring about skin colour, which lets the optical component run at lower fluence. That margin is why E-light stretches IPL further into tanned and darker clients, though never past the need for conservative settings and test spots.
A buyer's decision rule
Write down the three services that will pay the rent. If one of them dominates, buy the dedicated laser for it and add versatility later. If the menu is genuinely broad from day one, an E-light console covers it from a single 25.5kg box. Most of our distributors place fleets built on exactly that logic: one or two hero lasers, E-light for the long tail.
